Reflexology

Reflexology involves specific techniques for restoring balance and harmony to the mind and body, by working on the physical and emotional body mapped out on the hands and feet.

Reflexology is good for everyone. Not only does it have wonderful relaxing effects... but also, Reflexology boosts the immune system by stimulating the production of ‘T’ cells, through touch, and many conditions given up on by conventional medicine are helped by it.

By working on the feet we can influence other areas of the body - perhaps they are our ‘weak spots’ perhaps they are the parts we overuse or abuse.  A Reflexology treatment encourages the body to heal itself.

Reflexologists understand how mental, physical and emotional stresses involved in daily living can cause a breakdown in health. Lack of energy and not feeling good may be the first warning leading to disease...

The feet are divided into ten zones from the head to the feet.  Reflexologists apply pressure to the mapping points for all the structures of the body on the feet, hands or face.  Working in one zone affects all the organs in that zone.

WHAT IS REFLEXOLOGY?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which are believed to correspond to all organs and parts of the body. Some practitioners may also include work on points found in the face and ears. Reflexology works on an individual basis and may alleviate and improve symptoms such as everyday stress and tension.

WHAT CAN REFLEXOLOGY DO?

  • encourages relaxation - so important for the body to heal itself
  • aids flexibility - by working on the muscles and joints of the body through  the feet, movement becomes easier and less painful
  • increases the circulation of blood with its oxygen, nutrients and healing  hormones
  • assists the removal of waste products from your exertions - this is done by  affecting the circulation of venous blood and lymph through the body
  • decreases tension and those ‘uptight’ and anxious feelings
  • speeds up recovery time after surgery or injury
  • helps to prevent you from becoming sick and ill, through its effects on the  immune system
  • improves the repair mechanisms of the body and reduces inflammation
  • helps to restore or maintain a healthy structure - essential to avoid  chronic conditions developing
  • improves body awareness - helping posture.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT A REFLEXOLOGY APPOINTMENT?

During a typical reflexology session the reflexologist will take a detailed medical history. Sessions are usually performed in a comfortable chair or on a couch. If it is to be performed on the feet, the client will be asked to remove footwear and socks but other forms of reflexology, e.g. hand, require no removal of clothing. The practitioner will make a visual and tactile examination of the area to be worked before beginning the precise reflexology massage movements. The particular types of movements involved require the application of an appropriate pressure using the thumb and fingers.

Reflexology can be a wonderfully relaxing experience where you can take time out from everyday pressures. The therapist’s expert touch will help you relax which can help improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The result is an overall sense of wellbeing.
